Abstract
Requirements for multirole aircraft, like the F-16, to achieve high supersonic airspeeds and high altitudes in air-to-air configurations lead to thin airfoil shapes and lightweight structures. Meanwhile, the same aircraft is expected to be able to carry heavy underwing stores and still achieve at least high subsonic airspeeds. This combination of lightweight airframes and heavy loads consistently results in highly flexible aircraft that are susceptible to aeroelastic instabilities such as flutter and limit-cycle oscillation (LCO) [1].
