Abstract
Effective heat distribution across the surface of rigid concrete pavements is critical for applications such as electrically conductive or heated pavement systems. This study investigates the performance of silicon carbide (SiC, grit #600) as a cement supplement to improve the thermal behavior of concrete. SiC, known for its high thermal conductivity and mechanical stability, was incorporated into concrete mixtures at addition levels of 1%, 2%, 3%, 4%, and 5% by weight of cement. Concrete specimens were placed over a controlled heating source, and surface temperatures were recorded at predetermined locations to evaluate heat distribution patterns. Rather than focusing on standardized thermal conductivity values, the experimental procedures were designed to assess the practical performance of SiC-modified concrete in distributing heat across its surface. The findings highlight the influence of incremental SiC additions on thermal distribution, providing insights into the potential of SiC-enhanced concrete for smart and energy-efficient pavement applications. © ASCE.
