Abstract
Yttrium-fluoride crystals doped with trivalent holmium at a wide range of ion concentrations are promising mid-infrared laser gain media. We report the spectroscopic properties of the birefringent laser crystals Ho3+:YLiF4 (Ho:YLF) and Ho3+:BaY2F8 (Ho:BYF) doped at Ho3+ ion concentrations ranging from 6–20 at.%. The polarized optical cross-sections are obtained using the Füchtbauer–Ladenburg and Integral Reciprocity methods for several key pump and laser transitions of 6.5 at.% Ho:YLF and 6–20 at.% Ho:BYF, and room temperature fluorescence lifetimes are obtained for the 5I7 and 5I6 manifolds in 6.1, 17.9, and 20.0 at.% Ho:BYF. The fluorescence lifetimes increased with respect to increasing ion concentration in BYF, indicating a concentration-dependent fluorescent reabsorption.
