Abstract
This study sought to develop a proof of concept design tool to predict the optimum amount of stainless steel foils to include in a hybrid composite layup near fastener sites to improve bearing characteristics. Using assumptions made from static testing of structures comprised of carbon fiber and stainless steel foils, an application was developed that properly predicts as-tested structures and responds to user design inputs and variations to predict an optimum design for the given load scenario. Basic concepts of optimization are discussed as well as algorithm employment and code development. Abstract © AIAA.
