Abstract

In a companion article ( The Military Engineer , March- April 2001), colleagues Derek R. Ferland and Mark N. Goltz showed how a horizontal flow treatment well (HFTW) system with in-well metallic reactors could be used to degrade chlorinated groundwater contaminants in situ. An HFTW system involves the installation of multiple dual-screened wells (Fig. 1). Ferland and Goltz noted that the design of that system depends first on modeling ground- water flow under the relatively complex hydraulic gradients imposed by the multiple dual-screened wells. Here we offer a simple methodology to model the main components of these flows. The methodology can then be used to design an HFTW system.
