Abstract
Thermal spray is a hazardous waste powder composed of metals and ceramics produced during aircraft maintenance, such as that carried out by the U.S. Air Force. Disposing of this hazardous waste threatens the environment and human health.
However, recycling or reclaiming it can alleviate environmental and financial impacts and reduce resource demands. Recent research conducted on the thermal spray waste stream of Tinker AFB, Okla., by the Air Force Institute of Technology analyzed how recycling and reclamation throughout the Department of Defense (DOD) could both save money while also lessening the burden to the environment through disposal and resource extraction reduction.
