Abstract
This paper investigates response surface methodology as an alternative approach to orbit selection in satellite constellation design. The current literature relies heavily on genetic algorithms for orbit selection in satellite constellation design. The novel methodical application of design of experiments and response surface analysis optimizes the orbital parameters of a single satellite circular repeating ground track orbit. The performance of response surface methodology is compared against a meshgrid sampling method and a genetic algorithm. A string of pearls approach to create a satellite constellation enhances the coverage properties by placing additional satellites in orbits following the same ground track as the optimized single satellite orbit.
