Abstract

This research effort studied the effect of subset size and step size on the spatial resolution and accuracy of Digital Image Correlation (DIC). In addition, DIC was compared with moiré interferometry in an attempt to give future researchers guidance on which method would be appropriate for their research. Strains fields were calculated from displacement fields measured by each method. The strain fields were then compared. The main findings of the research were that: increased subset sizes caused a smoothing of data; increased step sizes reduced the resolution of the data; DIC is an accurate displacement measurement technique; the spatial resolution of DIC is less than that of moiré interferometry; DIC is a highly portable displacement measurement system; DIC is much faster than moiré interferometry.
